The Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, has expressed satisfaction with the ongoing rehabilitation of the Sekondi Sports Stadium while issuing a firm call for a long-term sustainability strategy. Following a recent inspection of the facility, the Minister highlighted the significant progress made toward restoring the stadium to its former glory. However, he also used the visit to address the historical neglect of the infrastructure, emphasizing that the current works must be protected by a robust maintenance culture to prevent the stadium from falling into another cycle of decay.
During his assessment, Minister Nelson pointed out a discrepancy between previous official reports and the actual state of the facility prior to this intervention. He noted that former claims suggesting the stadium was 90% complete were misleading, as the actual condition was considerably worse than described. This reality check underscored the necessity of the current comprehensive rehabilitation efforts and the importance of transparent reporting regarding national sporting assets.
Central to the Minister’s concerns is the lack of a consistent revenue-generating model for the stadium. With the decline of major professional football clubs in the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis that would typically serve as primary tenants, the Minister urged the National Sports Authority (NSA) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports to look beyond traditional football matches. He suggested that the facility should be marketed for diverse sporting events and commercial activities to ensure it remains active and self-sustaining.
Looking ahead, Minister Nelson tasked the NSA and the Ministry of Youth and Sports with developing a clear, resource-driven strategy for the facility’s post-rehabilitation era. He argued that without a dedicated management plan, the significant financial investment currently being made would be at risk. The goal, according to the Minister, is to transform the Sekondi Sports Stadium into a vibrant hub for athletics and regional events that can contribute meaningfully to the local economy and sports development.
