Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe has called for the comprehensive digitalization and modernization of Ghana’s port operations to secure the nation’s position as a premier logistics hub in West Africa. Speaking at a ceremony marking the 40th anniversary of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), the Minister emphasized that enhancing port efficiency is critical for maintaining a competitive edge and fostering regional trade. He noted that the government is committed to transforming the maritime sector into a more agile and customer-centric industry.
To achieve this vision, Mr. Nikpe outlined six strategic priorities aimed at improving the competitiveness of the port system. These include streamlining cargo handling processes, reducing administrative delays, and strengthening coordination among various port agencies. The Minister highlighted that the ability to serve landlocked neighboring countries effectively is a primary benchmark for success. He stressed that integrated digital systems are essential to alleviate congestion and provide the seamless logistics services required by modern international trade.
The anniversary event also served as an awards ceremony where the GPHA honored shipping lines, agents, and cargo customers for their contributions to the maritime sector. Mr. Nikpe used the platform to call for sustained collaboration among all industry stakeholders, noting that the evolving demands of global shipping require a highly skilled and adaptable workforce. He urged continued investment in human capital and infrastructure to support the transition toward a more technologically advanced port environment.
The Director-General and Board Chairman of the GPHA echoed the Minister’s sentiments, highlighting the importance of strategic partnerships in ensuring the authority’s future success. By focusing on multimodal connectivity and regional integration, Ghana aims to further consolidate its role as the gateway to the West African sub-region, facilitating smoother trade flows and economic growth across the continent.
