Ghana national team captain Jordan Ayew has officially completed a move to EFL Championship side Sheffield United, signing a one-year contract as a free agent. The 34-year-old forward joins the Blades after his tenure with Leicester City concluded at the end of the previous season. The deal, confirmed on September 8, 2026, sees Ayew filling the final spot in manager Chris Wilder’s 25-man roster for the 2026/27 campaign, bringing a wealth of elite-level experience to the South Yorkshire club.
Ayew’s decision to join Sheffield United comes after he reportedly declined lucrative offers from the Saudi Pro League. According to Henry Asante Twum, the Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), the veteran forward prioritized remaining in Europe to continue competing at a high level. Ayew revealed that a personal call from manager Chris Wilder played a decisive role in his move, noting that the negotiations were swift and that he did not hesitate to commit to the club’s vision for the upcoming season.
Manager Chris Wilder expressed immense satisfaction with the acquisition, highlighting Ayew’s versatility across the attacking line and his leadership qualities. Having recently captained Ghana during the 2026 FIFA World Cup and boasting over 500 competitive appearances for clubs such as Marseille, Crystal Palace, and Aston Villa, Ayew is expected to be a stabilizing force for the team. Wilder drew parallels between Ayew and previous successful free-agent signings, emphasizing that his ability to play multiple forward positions adds vital depth to the squad.
The signing is particularly timely for Sheffield United, who have had a slow start to the season with only one victory in their opening five matches. Ayew, who has been maintaining his fitness by training at Nania Park in Ghana, is expected to integrate into the first-team squad immediately. Beyond his club contributions, the move ensures that the Black Stars captain remains in peak competitive form ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, where he is expected to play a central role for the national team.
