Dr. John Jinapor, Ghana's Minister for Energy and Green Transition, has issued a call for African nations to establish a comprehensive solar energy value chain to bolster the continent's economic resilience. Speaking at the International Solar Alliance (ISA) Assembly, the Minister emphasized that creating a robust local industry is essential for enhancing energy security and accelerating industrialisation across the region. He pointed out that while Africa possesses abundant solar resources, it must transition from being a mere consumer of imported solar technology to becoming an active producer.
Dr. Jinapor highlighted Africa's vast sunshine as a primary resource that remains underutilized despite its potential to transform national economies. By leveraging this natural advantage, he argued that countries can significantly reduce their heavy reliance on expensive imported fuels, which often makes African economies vulnerable to global market volatility. To achieve this, the Minister encouraged the advancement of localized solar initiatives, specifically suggesting that governments prioritize the implementation of solar-powered streetlights and rooftop installations as immediate steps toward decentralized energy solutions.
Central to the Minister's message was the urgent need for technology transfer and the development of local industrial capacity. He stressed that a complete value chain—encompassing everything from the manufacturing of solar components to technical system maintenance—would ensure that the economic benefits of the green transition remain within the continent. This strategic approach is expected to drive economic transformation by fostering local innovation and creating high-quality jobs for Africa's growing workforce.
The Minister concluded by framing solar energy not just as a power source, but as a catalyst for broader economic growth. By building local expertise and manufacturing hubs, African nations can secure their energy future while participating more competitively in the global green economy. His address at the ISA Assembly underscores Ghana's commitment to leading regional efforts in energy diversification and sustainable development under the current administration.
