A tragic weather-related incident in the Jinja District of Uganda has resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left three others fighting for their lives. The fatal lightning strike occurred in Kamira Village, located within the Namagera Town Council, during an afternoon characterized by light rainfall. The victims were part of a group working in the local sugarcane industry, a vital economic activity for the community in the eastern part of the country.
The incident took place while the victims were reportedly offloading sugarcane at a weighbridge. Despite only a light drizzle falling at the time, the sudden lightning bolt struck the group directly while they were working in the open air. The force of the strike caused immediate fatalities for two of the workers, while three of their companions were left with critical injuries that necessitated emergency medical intervention.
As the community of Kamira Village processes the loss, the three injured survivors are receiving intensive care at a nearby medical facility. The event underscores the significant risks faced by outdoor manual laborers during seasonal weather changes in Uganda, where lightning strikes are a recurring hazard. Local leaders have expressed their condolences to the families of the deceased as the region grapples with the sudden nature of the tragedy.
