Jerry Ahmed Shaibu, the Member of Parliament for the Weija-Gbawe constituency, has formally petitioned the Ministry of Transport for the allocation of five dedicated Metro Mass Transit (MMT) buses. The request is aimed at alleviating severe public transport challenges faced by residents within the constituency, who are increasingly struggling with long wait times and inadequate service coverage. Shaibu’s appeal highlights the growing pressure on existing transport infrastructure as the local population continues to expand rapidly.
The proposed deployment of the buses is strategically divided to address the busiest commuter corridors in the area. Specifically, the MP is requesting three buses to serve the Weija-to-Accra route and two additional buses for the Gbawe-to-Accra route. According to the petition, these specific routes experience significant overcrowding at terminals during peak hours, leaving many commuters stranded or forced to rely on unofficial and often unsafe transport alternatives that jeopardize their safety.
Beyond immediate commuter comfort, the MP emphasized the broader economic and social impacts of the current transport deficit. He noted that the daily struggle for reliable transportation is significantly hampering the productivity of his constituents, as many spend hours in traffic or waiting for vehicles at terminals. By providing dedicated Metro Mass Transit services, the MP hopes to provide a more affordable and organized commuting experience while potentially easing traffic congestion on the main arteries connecting Weija-Gbawe to the capital.
The petition serves as a formal call for government intervention in an area that has become a major residential and commercial hub in the Greater Accra Region. As residents await a response from the Ministry of Transport, the move underscores the urgent need for a more integrated public transportation system to keep pace with urban development. The successful acquisition of these buses would provide a critical lifeline for thousands of workers and students who commute daily from the district.
