Jeremy Thomas, the legendary British film producer who brought epic scale and bold artistic vision to the screen, has passed away at the age of 77. Thomas died peacefully on Friday at his home in Oxfordshire, surrounded by his family. Best known for producing the 1987 masterpiece "The Last Emperor," which swept the Academy Awards, Thomas's career spanned over 50 years and solidified his reputation as one of the most significant figures in international independent cinema.
His professional legacy is perhaps most defined by his collaboration with Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci on "The Last Emperor." The film made history by winning nine Oscars in 1988, including Best Picture, and earning Thomas the Academy Award for Best Producer. Throughout his five-decade career, Thomas was celebrated for his willingness to take risks on complex, auteur-driven projects. He formed long-standing creative partnerships with some of the industry’s most provocative directors, including David Cronenberg, with whom he worked on "A Dangerous Method," and Nagisa Oshima for the classic "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence."
Beyond the accolades for individual films, Thomas was a pillar of the European and British film communities. His filmography, which includes the gritty cult favorite "Sexy Beast," demonstrated a remarkable range that spanned from intimate character studies to grand historical dramas. In recognition of his enduring contributions to the craft, he was honored with the European Film Academy’s award for Outstanding European Achievement in World Cinema in 2006. His service to the arts was further recognized in 2009 when he was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the New Year Honours.
Even in his final years, Thomas remained an active force in the industry, continuing to champion unique voices in film. His latest project, "Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo," serves as a final testament to his enduring passion for cinema and is scheduled to have its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. As the global film community mourns his loss, Thomas will be remembered not only for his impressive collection of awards but for his unwavering commitment to independent filmmaking and his ability to bring sophisticated, challenging stories to a global audience.
