Vice-President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has called for the rule of law to prevail in the investigation into sexual assault allegations against the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS). Speaking on the matter for the first time, she emphasized the national importance of the case and the need to protect the welfare of the affected students. The Vice-President urged the public to avoid prejudice and allow the legal system to address the claims thoroughly to ensure justice for all involved parties.
The allegations involve Mr. Zakaria Abdulai, who has since been suspended by the Ghana Education Service (GES). Mr. Abdulai has also stepped aside from a political race to allow for a full investigation by the police into claims of gross sexual misconduct involving multiple female students. The Vice-President noted that she had been monitoring the situation while abroad and acknowledged the official responses already issued by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), highlighting that the case has serious implications for the lives of the victims.
Before her statement, the Vice-President faced significant criticism from members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP). Dennis Miracles Aboagye, the NPP’s National Communications Director, and Mavis Hawa Koomson, the NPP National Women’s Organiser, both described her initial silence as disappointing. They argued that as Ghana’s first female Vice-President, she had a particular responsibility to advocate publicly for the safety and rights of young women and girls in such high-profile cases of alleged abuse.
In defense of the Vice-President, Dr. Victoria Lakshmi Hamah of the Progressive Organisation for Women’s Advancement (POWA) argued that evaluations of her performance should not be restricted to gender-specific issues. POWA asserted that as the Vice-President of the entire nation, her contributions span all areas of governance and institutional responsibility. Professor Opoku-Agyemang concluded by urging the public to allow the legal process to reach a conclusion, stressing that the outcome of the case would have lasting impact on the protection of students nationwide.
