Ghanaian swimmer Jada Yankey has set a new personal best in the women’s 100m freestyle at the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal. The 14-year-old athlete’s performance marks a significant personal milestone as she competes against the world’s most promising young talents on the Olympic stage. Her achievement represents a bright spot for the Ghanaian contingent in the early stages of the competition, which is making history as the first Olympic event held on the African continent.
Competing in Heat 5 of the freestyle event, Yankey clocked a time of 1:02.15. This performance successfully lowered her previous personal record of 1:02.96, demonstrating clear progress in her competitive development. Although she finished second in her specific heat, her time was ultimately not fast enough to secure a place in the semi-finals or final rounds, as advancement was determined by the fastest overall times across the entire field of competitors.
The 100m freestyle is only the beginning of Yankey’s campaign at the Dakar Games. Despite missing out on the semi-finals in her first event, the young swimmer showed resilience and improved her global standing. This experience is expected to serve as a foundation for her future career, as she is one of the youngest participants in the pool, gaining vital exposure to high-pressure international competition environments.
Looking ahead, Yankey is scheduled to represent Ghana in three more disciplines during the remainder of the Games. She will return to the pool to compete in the 50m freestyle, 50m butterfly, and 50m breaststroke. These upcoming races offer the young athlete further opportunities to test her speed and potentially lower more of her personal records as Team Ghana seeks to build momentum in Dakar.
