The International Organisation for Migration (IOM), in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), has distributed essential relief items to 201 individuals affected by flooding in the Volta Region. The intervention specifically targets residents within the Keta Municipality and the Anloga District who have suffered significant losses due to recent environmental challenges. This joint effort aims to provide immediate comfort while addressing the critical needs of the most vulnerable households in these coastal communities, ensuring that the recovery process begins with basic necessities.
The donated supplies, valued at thousands of Ghana cedis, include a variety of household and health-related materials designed to restore basic living conditions. Among the items handed over to the victims were mattresses, mosquito nets, comprehensive hygiene kits, and cooking utensils. By providing these necessities, the IOM and NADMO seek to alleviate the daily hardships faced by displaced or impacted families, ensuring they have the tools to maintain hygiene and dignity during the recovery phase. The distribution process prioritised vulnerable groups who lost their possessions to the rising waters.
Mr. David Kwame Darko, representing the IOM, highlighted that the provision of hygiene kits and mosquito nets is particularly crucial for preventing the outbreak of waterborne diseases and malaria, which frequently occur after severe flooding. While local leaders expressed their profound gratitude for the support, they also used the opportunity to call for more permanent solutions to the region's flood challenges. They urged the government and stakeholders to implement sustainable drainage and coastal protection measures to safeguard the communities from future disasters and provide lasting security for residents.
