Igho Ubiribo, a 43-year-old Nigerian-British businessman and prominent social media influencer, has passed away following a cosmetic penis enlargement procedure while on vacation in Thailand. A UK coroner has ruled that the procedure, which involved the injection of fillers, led to a fatal pulmonary embolism. Ubiribo, widely known by his social media aliases "Tiny" and "Ego," was vacationing in Bangkok with his wife when he underwent the treatment. The incident has sparked significant international debate regarding the safety of elective cosmetic surgeries and the risks associated with medical tourism.
The procedure involved the injection of hyaluronic acid and lidocaine, a common combination used in cosmetic enhancements. However, complications arose shortly after the treatment; while receiving a massage, Ubiribo began complaining of severe chest pain and subsequently collapsed. He was rushed to a local hospital but lost consciousness before a necessary CT scan could be performed. Despite extensive resuscitation efforts and prolonged CPR, he was pronounced dead on March 6. A subsequent postmortem examination revealed the presence of hyaluronic acid in his lungs, confirming that the filler material had entered his bloodstream and blocked his pulmonary arteries.
An inquest into his death provided a clear link between the cosmetic enhancement and the fatal outcome, with both Thai and UK medical examiners finding consistent evidence that the filler injections were the direct cause of the pulmonary embolism. The coroner’s findings underscored the inherent dangers of using injectable fillers for such procedures, emphasizing how these substances can inadvertently enter the circulatory system with catastrophic results. The ruling serves as a formal confirmation of the medical risks that experts have long warned about regarding non-traditional use of dermal fillers.
Ubiribo was well-known for his affluent lifestyle, boasting approximately 185,000 followers on Instagram and a portfolio of luxury properties. His passing drew massive attention within the West African and British social circles, culminating in a lavish funeral attended by notable figures, including Nigerian Afrobeats star Davido. He was reportedly laid to rest in a gold-plated coffin valued at over $600,000. Beyond the spectacle of his high-profile life, medical experts have used this case to highlight the lethal risks associated with unregulated or high-risk cosmetic procedures, urging individuals to exercise extreme caution when seeking enhancements in foreign jurisdictions.
