The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA Ghana) has officially launched the "Ghana Nuclear Phase II Completion and Investment Readiness Support Programme" to bolster the country's ambitions for nuclear energy. This one-year initiative is designed to facilitate the development of Ghana's first nuclear power plant by addressing critical foundational gaps. The programme focuses on strengthening institutional coordination, human resource capacity, and regulatory preparedness, which are essential for the successful deployment of nuclear technology.
Aligned with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) milestones framework, the project provides a structured roadmap for meeting international safety and operational standards. By enhancing governance and assessing current human capacity needs, the IEA Ghana seeks to ensure that the nation is technically and administratively prepared for the complexities of nuclear power. This initiative is particularly aimed at improving the country's regulatory readiness, a key requirement for moving from the planning phase to active implementation.
The programme also aims to support high-level decision-making regarding financing and implementation priorities within the energy sector. As Ghana seeks to diversify its energy mix and secure long-term power stability, the IEA’s support programme serves as a bridge to investment readiness. The successful completion of this phase is expected to provide the necessary framework for attracting the capital and partnerships required to bring the country's nuclear energy vision to fruition.
