Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu Announces GH¢4.2 Billion Allocation for SHS Feeding as GES Releases Essential Funds

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that the government has allocated GH¢4.2 billion specifically for the feeding of students under the Free Senior High School (SHS) program. This significant financial commitment is intended to ensure uninterrupted feeding services as schools across the country reopen for the 2026/2027 academic year. To support this effort, President John Mahama has directed an immediate review of the SHS menu, with a focus on enhancing meal quality by incorporating more protein-rich foods, such as eggs and chicken, into daily student diets.

In tandem with the Minister's announcement, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has confirmed the successful transfer of funds into the accounts of various Senior High Schools and Senior High Technical Schools (SHTSs). These funds are designated for perishable supplies covering the period from March 1 to September 4, 2026, as well as part payment for recurring items necessary for first-year students for the 2025/2026 academic cycle. The GES Management has instructed Regional Directors to notify school heads of these transfers immediately to facilitate smooth operations as the new term begins.

During a recent monitoring tour of educational facilities in the Western Region, Minister Iddrisu assessed student welfare and facility standards, reiterating the administration's dedication to maintaining a stable educational environment. While the government highlights these financial and nutritional improvements, the current admission process for new students has drawn a variety of responses from the public. Some parents have praised the efficiency of the registration cycle, while others have reported encountering cumbersome procedures that have slowed the enrollment of their wards.

To ensure transparency and accountability regarding the newly released funds, the GES has reminded all school heads of their obligation to submit official receipts to the Director-General. Management emphasized that compliance with these administrative directives is mandatory for all participating institutions. As the 2026/2027 academic year progresses, the government maintains that these proactive financial measures and dietary improvements will provide the necessary foundation for student success and institutional stability.
