The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ghana, in partnership with the ECOWAS Commission, has officially launched the "ECOWAS for All" campaign in Accra. This national citizens’ engagement and public sensitization initiative is designed to bring the benefits of regional integration closer to the people, ensuring that ECOWAS protocols translate into tangible opportunities for ordinary Ghanaians. By focusing on the rights of citizens within the sub-region, the campaign seeks to shift the organizational paradigm from an "ECOWAS of States" to an "ECOWAS of Peoples and Prosperity," aligning with the broader ECOWAS Vision 2050 goals.
Speaking at the launch, Deputy Minister James Gyakye Quayson emphasized that the success of regional integration depends heavily on active citizen engagement and a clear understanding of regional policies. He noted that many Ghanaians, particularly traders, entrepreneurs, and students, remain unaware of the significant benefits afforded to them, such as visa-free travel, the right of residence, and duty-free trade within the member states. The campaign is specifically designed to address this information gap, empowering individuals to navigate the sub-region with greater confidence and leverage the economic potential of a unified West African market.
The "ECOWAS for All" initiative will employ a variety of outreach strategies to reach its target audience, including stakeholder forums, workshops, and direct market sensitization activities. There will also be a concerted effort to engage communities at border areas, where the practical application of free movement protocols is most critical. ECOWAS Resident Representative, Ambassador Gana Lawan Mohammed, highlighted that while policies are created at the regional level, their impact is felt on the ground. He underscored the importance of ongoing initiatives like the ECOWAS Biometric Identity Card, which aims to resolve persistent challenges regarding document recognition and the facilitation of movement across borders.
Scheduled to run from October to December 2026, the campaign represents a strategic push to harmonize regional objectives with the lived realities of citizens. By fostering a deeper understanding of ECOWAS protocols, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the ECOWAS Commission aim to create a more inclusive regional environment. Ultimately, the campaign serves as a call to action for all stakeholders to cooperate more effectively, ensuring that the promise of a borderless, prosperous West Africa becomes a reality for every citizen.
