The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), in partnership with logistics firm HoneyWorld, has officially launched the RAM Revolver Containerised Bulk Handling (CBH) system at the Port of Tema. This innovative technology is designed to streamline the export of dry bulk commodities, with a specific focus on improving the handling and transport of shea nuts. The introduction of the system marks a significant shift in the port’s operational capabilities, aiming to position Tema as a more competitive hub for bulk exports in the sub-region.
The RAM Revolver technology facilitates the direct loading of commodities from storage facilities into vessel hatches using specialised containers. This method contrasts sharply with traditional handling processes, which often required multiple transfer points that increased the risk of spillage and environmental exposure. By using these specialised containers, the system ensures that bulk goods remain protected from contamination until the moment they are discharged into the ship, thereby preserving the quality of the cargo and significantly reducing product waste.
Mr. Tabon Zuma, the Director of Port, noted that the implementation of this system represents a fundamental change in how shea nuts have historically been handled at the facility. He emphasised that by eliminating additional handling at the quay, the port significantly reduces the risk of product contamination. This modernisation effort is part of a broader initiative by the GPHA to reform bulk cargo handling practices and ensure they meet international standards for cleanliness and operational efficiency.
The successful deployment of the RAM CBH system reflects a growing collaboration between the GPHA and private sector partners like HoneyWorld to modernise Ghana’s maritime infrastructure. As the port seeks to increase its throughput of bulk exports, such technological advancements are expected to lower operational costs for exporters and enhance the overall reliability of Ghana's logistics chain. This move signals a commitment to adopting global best practices in port management and environmental stewardship.
