Global Media Alliance (GMA) and Japan Motors have presented 60 white canes to the Ghana Blind Union (GBU) to enhance the mobility and independence of visually impaired persons across the country. The presentation, which took place to mark the annual International White Cane Day, underscores a long-standing commitment by both corporate entities to support inclusive development and social welfare. The donation was made possible through the 2026 edition of the Corporate Run, an annual event that encourages fitness among professionals while raising funds for charitable causes.
The white canes were funded by allocating 25 percent of the registration fees paid by participants in the Corporate Run. According to the organizers, this specific contribution model ensures that every runner directly supports the welfare of the visually impaired community. Ernest Boateng, the Chief Executive Officer of GMA, emphasized during the presentation that the company remains dedicated to creating equal opportunities and fostering a culture of inclusion. He noted that the partnership with the GBU has been consistent over the years, aiming to provide essential tools that facilitate safer and more efficient movement for its members.
Representing the automotive partner, Salah Kweku Kalmoni, the Executive Director of Japan Motors, expressed pride in the collaborative effort. He highlighted that the partnership is built on a foundation of solidarity, with both companies recognizing the challenges faced by individuals with visual impairments in navigating daily life. Dr. Peter Obeng-Asamoah, the Executive Director of the Ghana Blind Union, accepted the donation and lauded the two organizations for their unwavering support. He pointed out that white canes are not merely tools but are symbols of independence and safety for the blind, and such donations are critical in bridging the gap for those who cannot afford them.
The initiative serves as a model for blending corporate wellness with tangible social impact. By integrating a fitness event like the Corporate Run with a specific charitable goal, GMA and Japan Motors have demonstrated how corporate social responsibility can be effectively channeled into community development. The GBU has called for more organizations to follow suit, noting that there is a continuous need for assistive devices to ensure that no visually impaired person is left behind in the quest for mobility and social integration.
