The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has officially launched the 30th edition of its Media Awards in Accra, receiving a record-breaking 327 entries from 206 journalists across the country. The ceremony is scheduled for November 7, 2026, and is expected to be a high-profile event with President John Mahama serving as the Special Guest of Honour. The launch marks a milestone for the association as it prepares to celebrate excellence in the media industry, with other notable guests including the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, and the Chief Justice, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie.
To ensure the integrity of the selection process, GJA President Albert Dwumfour has inaugurated a nine-member committee tasked with evaluating the submissions. This year’s competition introduces two new categories designed to reflect the evolving media landscape: the New Media Platform Award, which aims to promote ethical practices among bloggers and digital journalists, and the Governor’s Economic and Financial Story of the Year Award, sponsored by the Governor of the Bank of Ghana. Mr. Dwumfour urged the committee members to execute their duties with professionalism and fairness to maintain the awards' credibility.
During the launch ceremony, the GJA leadership also addressed the physical safety of journalists by issuing a 14-day ultimatum to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF). The association is demanding an investigation into reports that military personnel assaulted journalists from Bullet TV and Atinka FM during a demolition exercise at La Pleasure Beach. The incident reportedly resulted in injuries to reporters and damage to their professional equipment. President Dwumfour stated that the GJA will not tolerate the harassment of media professionals and called on state authorities to ensure that journalists can perform their duties without fear of violence.
As the GJA moves toward the awards ceremony in November, it continues to focus on both the recognition of talent and the defense of the press. By incorporating new media standards and advocating for justice in cases of assault, the association is positioning the 30th Media Awards as a commitment to the growth and protection of the Ghanaian media. The upcoming event will highlight the essential role journalists play in national development while reinforcing the standards required for a responsible and free press.
