The Ghanaian nursing profession is experiencing a dual focus on expanding global mobility and reinforcing domestic standards. The Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA) has successfully brokered a landmark partnership with the City of Columbus, Ohio, to create structured employment pathways for qualified Ghanaian health professionals in the United States. Simultaneously, the Ministry of Health is strengthening internal quality controls, with Deputy Minister Professor Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah calling for a renewed commitment to compassion and professional excellence within the nation's military healthcare sector.
Under the leadership of CEO Margaret Ansei, the GEA formalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in February 2026 involving the City of Columbus and Ghana’s Ministries of Labour and Health. This initiative is designed to provide a transparent and ethical framework for Ghanaian nurses to practice in the U.S. The agreement specifically outlines rigorous recruitment procedures and employment arrangements that prioritize the dignity and welfare of participating professionals, ensuring that global mobility is handled through responsible, government-backed channels rather than informal migration.
While international horizons expand, the government remains focused on the integrity of healthcare delivery at home. During the closing ceremony of the 2026 Military Nightingales’ Week Celebration, Deputy Health Minister Prof. Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah addressed military nurses and midwives, urging them to uphold the highest values of patient care. She emphasized the critical role of mentorship, suggesting that the wealth of knowledge held by retired professionals must be leveraged to train the next generation of health experts. The event also featured awards for outstanding personnel, highlighting the Ministry's ongoing support for the training and welfare of military healthcare staff.
These developments reflect a strategic, multi-pronged approach to managing Ghana’s healthcare human resources. By establishing formal channels for international placement through the Columbus partnership, the state aims to provide professionals with global experience while protecting their rights. At the same time, by emphasizing excellence and mentorship in specialized sectors like military nursing, the Ministry of Health seeks to ensure that the domestic healthcare infrastructure remains robust, resilient, and capable of providing high-quality care to all Ghanaians.
