Commercial transport operators in Ghana, including the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Concerned Drivers Association, have threatened a nationwide suspension of services starting November 1, 2026. The planned industrial action is a protest against the rollout of TraffiTech-GH, a new digital traffic enforcement system. The operators argue that the government has failed to address critical infrastructure concerns and regulatory breaches before deploying the automated fine system.
Central to the drivers' grievances is the widespread occupation of designated bus stops and pedestrian walkways by traders and hawkers. David Agboado, the National Public Relations Officer for the Concerned Drivers Association, stated that drivers are frequently forced to pick up or drop off passengers in unauthorized areas because official zones are blocked. The unions are demanding the strict enforcement of Regulation 142 of the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012, which mandates the clearing of bus stops, arguing that without these corrections, the TraffiTech-GH system will unfairly penalize drivers for violations beyond their control.
Despite the strike threat, the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service has confirmed it is ready to proceed with the November 1 launch. The TraffiTech-GH system uses fixed and mobile cameras to detect traffic violations such as speeding and running red lights. Under the new program, vehicle owners will receive electronic violation notices via text message, complete with video evidence, allowing the police to enforce traffic laws digitally without the need for physical roadside stops or manual arrests.
Transport groups have advised the general public to arrange alternative transportation as they prepare to withdraw their vehicles from the roads. While the authorities maintain that the digital system is essential for improving road safety and compliance, the transport unions insist that their readiness is contingent on the government clearing public spaces. If no resolution is reached regarding the obstruction of bus stops, the nationwide transport network faces significant disruption as the enforcement system goes live.
