The Ghana Taekwondo Federation (GTF) has officially launched a major youth-centric campaign in the Ashanti Region, aimed at promoting the sport and its values across five regions in Ghana. Approximately 500 schoolchildren from 10 private schools gathered in Kumasi for the inaugural event. The initiative, themed "Promoting Taekwondo Awareness, Discipline, Fitness and Youth Development," marks a strategic effort by the federation to expand the reach of Taekwondo and integrate it more deeply into the lives of young Ghanaians.
The campaign is designed to cover the Ashanti, Northern, Upper West, Bono, and Central regions, providing increased access to Taekwondo training and equipment. GTF President Frederick Lartey Otu emphasized that the program's primary goal is not just to produce champions, but to foster well-rounded individuals through the martial art’s core tenets of discipline, confidence, and self-defence. By targeting the youth within the educational system, the federation hopes to nurture emerging talent and provide a platform for physical and mental development.
Stakeholders at the event highlighted the necessity of a holistic approach to child development, advocating for a stronger synergy between sports and education. Obenfo Nana Kwasi Gyetuah of the Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS) stressed the importance of elevating the role of sports within the school curriculum. To support these goals, the GTF presented uniforms and equipment to regional associations, ensuring that schools have the necessary resources to sustain the program. The launch featured impressive demonstrations by participating students, showcasing the practical benefits of the sport.
This five-region tour represents a significant step in decentralizing Taekwondo development in Ghana. As the campaign moves from the Ashanti Region to the Northern, Upper West, Bono, and Central regions, the GTF seeks to build a sustainable pipeline of talent while promoting a culture of fitness and resilience among the youth. The success of this initiative will rely heavily on continued collaboration between the federation, school administrators, and local sports authorities to ensure that Taekwondo remains a viable and accessible extracurricular activity for students nationwide.
