The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) has recorded a significant year-to-date gain of 63.1%, with the Composite Index (GSE-CI) reaching 14,303.4 points by October 2026. This performance was primarily driven by strong activity in the telecommunications, banking, and consumer sectors. Despite a recent trading week that saw more declining stocks than gainers, the overall market index remained bolstered by the robust performance of high-weighted listings.
Trading activity during the period was heavily concentrated, with Scancom Plc (MTN Ghana) maintaining its dominant position on the local bourse. MTN Ghana accounted for 81.6% of the total market turnover, which rose by 2.3% to approximately US$4.8 million. This concentration highlights the significant influence the telecommunications giant continues to exert on the exchange's liquidity and overall index direction.
Individual stock performances during the period were mixed across various sectors. GCB Bank Plc emerged as a notable gainer with a 4.6% increase in its share price, while Société Générale Ghana experienced a 7.4% decline. Corporate earnings reports also presented a varied picture; consumer goods companies Fan Milk and Unilever Ghana reported notable profit increases, whereas TotalEnergies saw a decline in profit due to lower sales volumes.
The market currently exhibits a negative breadth ratio of 9:3 in favor of decliners, indicating that while the main index is rising due to heavyweight stocks, many individual listings are facing downward pressure. Financial analysts at IC Insights expect to see stock-specific repricing in the coming weeks as investors reevaluate their portfolios following the latest third-quarter earnings reports.
