Ghana’s Sprint Duo Advance to 200m Semi-Finals After Record-Breaking 100m Final in Glasgow

The 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow have delivered a mix of heartbreak and renewed hope for Ghana’s athletics contingent as the track and field competition reaches its peak. While the nation’s pursuit of a podium finish in the premier 100m event ended in disappointment, the narrative has quickly shifted toward the 200m discipline where Ghana remains a formidable contender. As the sprint events continue to unfold, the Ghanaian team is balancing the lessons of the early finals with the momentum of successful preliminary rounds, keeping the country’s hopes for athletic glory alive on the international stage.

In the high-stakes men’s 100m final, Benjamin Azamati carried the weight of the nation’s expectations as the sole Ghanaian to reach the final race. Despite a determined effort, Azamati finished in seventh place with a time of 10.11 seconds, while fellow countryman Abdul-Rasheed Saminu also missed out on a podium finish in the earlier rounds. The event was ultimately defined by a historic performance from Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme, who secured the gold medal in stunning fashion. Clocking a time of 9.83 seconds despite adverse weather conditions, Eseme shattered the Commonwealth Games record previously held by Trinidad’s Ito Boldon. This achievement not only set a new national record for Cameroon but also positioned Eseme as the third-fastest sprinter of the season.

However, the disappointment in the 100m was quickly tempered by success in the men’s 200m heats, where Ghana’s sprint duo of Joseph Paul Amoah and James Dadzie both secured their places in the semi-finals. Amoah delivered a standout performance in the opening rounds, dominating Heat 1 with a commanding time of 20.36 seconds. His clinical finish and Dadzie’s successful qualification have revitalized the Ghanaian camp, shifting the focus to the longer sprint where the team has historically shown great depth. The pair's progression ensures that Ghana maintains a strong presence in the business end of the sprinting schedule.

Looking forward, the focus for the Ghanaian coaching staff turns to the strategic preparation of Amoah and Dadzie for their respective semi-final clashes. The success in the 200m heats provides a much-needed psychological boost for the delegation and sets the stage for a potential medal charge. As the competition in Glasgow enters its final days, the Ghanaian duo will need to replicate their heat-winning form against an increasingly elite field. The nation remains optimistic that the 200m event will provide the breakthrough needed to secure Ghana’s position on the athletics medal table at these Games.
