Ghana’s Education Sector Advances with National Schools Awards Launch, AI Literacy Challenge, and Cadet Corps Competition

Ghana’s educational landscape is undergoing a significant transformation as several high-profile initiatives were recently launched to improve accountability, student literacy, and discipline. At the forefront is the launch of the National Schools Awards (GALOP Edition) in Accra, an initiative by the National Schools Inspectorate Authority (NaSIA). Under the Ghana Accountability for Learning Outcomes Project (GALOP), with support from the World Bank and other development partners, these awards aim to recognize excellence and shift the national focus from mere student enrollment to measurable learning outcomes and institutional management. Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, emphasized that this move is critical for promoting continuous improvement and strengthening the quality of education across the country.

Simultaneously, the intellectual development of the youth is being fostered through the launch of the 2026 Literacy Challenge. Targeting students aged 11 to 15, this year’s competition centers on the burgeoning field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its impact on education. Participants are tasked with writing a 600-word letter to the Minister for Education, outlining the advantages and disadvantages of AI and offering recommendations for its integration into Ghanaian schools, particularly in underserved rural areas. Sponsored by Prospectus Ghana Limited, SIC Insurance, and Advocate Publishing, the challenge has garnered significant support from key stakeholders, including the Ghana Library Authority and the British Council, to enhance critical thinking and creativity among the youth.

In addition to academic and institutional reforms, the spirit of discipline and leadership was on full display at the National Cadet Drill and Band Competition held at the Ghana National Fire Service Training School in Accra. Despite heavy rainfall on June 30, 2026, the National Cadet Corps Ghana successfully hosted the event, where St Thomas Aquinas and Bishop Herman emerged as champions. The competition highlighted the resilience of the student participants and the importance of the Cadet Corps in fostering teamwork and character development. Together, these diverse initiatives—ranging from high-level institutional accountability to grassroots student competitions—reflect a holistic approach by the Ministry of Education and its partners to prepare Ghanaian students for the challenges of the 21st century.
