Administrator Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF), also known as MahamaCares, has met with medical specialists in Bolgatanga to refine healthcare delivery and ensure the protection of beneficiaries. The engagement focused on establishing safeguards against exploitation while gathering feedback from healthcare providers in the Upper East Region to improve access to specialized treatments. Madam Darko-Opoku emphasized that the fund's operations are designed to address the significant financial challenges and travel burdens families face when seeking specialized care.
During the session, the Administrator assured beneficiaries that the fund covers consultations, medications, and surgeries at no cost. To prevent abuse, the GMTF has implemented a rigorous verification process using specialist medical records to validate treatment requests. She highlighted the critical role of Patient Navigators in assisting those seeking care and reaffirmed that the fund operates independently of political considerations. The GMTF is financed by 20 percent of the National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL) and reports its operations directly to Parliament to ensure transparency.
Medical professionals at the meeting, including Dr. Joseph Kojo Tambil and Dr. Victor Dassa, called for urgent investment in diagnostic equipment, particularly for breast cancer detection. They highlighted the emotional and financial toll on patients forced to travel for diagnosis, noting that well-equipped local facilities are essential for early detection and improved treatment outcomes. In response, Darko-Opoku acknowledged these regional challenges and reiterated the fund’s commitment to improving infrastructure alongside financial assistance, including ongoing plans to develop cardiology centers to enhance specialized care accessibility in Northern Ghana.
This dialogue in Bolgatanga is part of a nationwide effort by the GMTF to address healthcare gaps and strengthen collaborations with medical professionals. By integrating financial support with infrastructure improvements and specialist feedback, the fund aims to provide a more comprehensive and accessible healthcare safety net. The management remains focused on ensuring that the resources allocated to MahamaCares result in tangible improvements in patient care and survival rates across the country.
