The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has distributed 300 life jackets to boat operators and fishers in Dambai to bolster safety standards on the Oti River. This donation is a key component of the authority's "Life Jackets for Safety and Livelihood Initiative," which seeks to curb the frequency of water-related accidents and ensure that commercial activities on Ghana's inland waterways are conducted under strict safety guidelines. The initiative highlights the GMA's commitment to reducing fatalities in communities where water transport is a primary mode of movement.
The distribution was structured to reach various segments of the local maritime community, with 100 jackets allocated to each of three primary beneficiary groups. Speaking at the ceremony, Captain Kodjo Adjarko Osei of the GMA emphasized that making safety equipment more accessible and affordable is a critical step in preventing avoidable drownings. He noted that the initiative is designed not only to provide essential gear but also to encourage a culture of compliance with maritime regulations among operators who rely on the river for their daily income.
Local leaders expressed strong support for the intervention, highlighting the Oti River's central role in the regional economy. Mr. Safo Nketiah, the local Chief Executive, pointed out that approximately 40% of Dambai’s residents are actively engaged in lake-related activities, ranging from fishing to ferry services. He praised the GMA for its proactive stance, noting that the provision of high-quality life jackets would provide a necessary safety net for the community and protect the livelihoods of those who work on the water.
Following the presentation, representatives of the fishers and boat operators pledged their commitment to the proper maintenance and consistent use of the new equipment. Beyond the physical donation, the GMA intends for this initiative to drive broader adherence to safety protocols, including avoiding vessel overloading and ensuring boats are seaworthy. As the authority continues its national outreach, the move in Dambai serves as a model for enhancing maritime safety in other inland fishing and transport hubs across the country.
