In a landmark moment for Ghanaian motorsport, a national delegation is preparing for its first-ever international appearance at the Karting Africa Showrun. Scheduled to take place in Luanda, Angola, from October 10 to 11, 2026, the event represents a significant step forward in the country's efforts to establish a presence in global racing. The showrun will feature 39 drivers from across the continent, serving as a high-profile exhibition and a competitive precursor to the inaugural Karting Africa Cup slated for 2027.
The Ghanaian contingent, organized under the auspices of Auto Racing Ghana (ARG), features a blend of experience and emerging youth talent. Led by ARG President Samuel Moses Opoku-Agyemang, the three-driver squad includes senior competitor Jihad Armand and two promising junior racers: 11-year-old Khlo Kusi-Asomah and 9-year-old Ezra Stephens. This inclusion of young talent highlights Ghana’s commitment to nurturing grassroots development within the sport, ensuring a pipeline for future international competitions.
Beyond the immediate competition, the initiative carries broader strategic goals for the development of the sport within Ghana. The National Sports Authority (NSA) has expressed firm support for the team, aligning with ARG’s vision to establish Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) standard tracks locally. Furthermore, the team intends to use the platform of motorsport to advocate for road safety initiatives, leveraging the precision and discipline of racing to promote better driving habits across the country.
The historic trip is made possible through significant corporate backing, primarily funded by Engineers & Planners. Additional support has been provided by Imperial General Assurance, ASKY Airlines, and Starbites. This collaborative effort between private sponsors and sports authorities underscores a growing interest in diversifying Ghana's sporting portfolio beyond traditional favorites, positioning karting as a viable path for athletic and technical excellence.
