Violence at Inter-School Sports Competitions Leads to Multiple Student Arrests and Remands

Inter-school sports festivals in Ghana, traditionally celebrated as platforms for athletic excellence and healthy competition, have recently been overshadowed by disturbing acts of violence. In two separate incidents across the Central Region, several students have been arrested or remanded into custody following brutal assaults on their peers. These developments have raised serious concerns about student safety and the increasing trend of hooliganism within the secondary education sports circuit.

In Cape Coast, six students from Aggrey Memorial Senior High School were arrested for allegedly assaulting Master Rexford Owusu-Ansah, a final-year student at Adisadel College. The attack occurred on February 20, 2026, as the victim and his friends were returning from the stadium during an inter-colleges sports festival. Owusu-Ansah suffered a fractured bone near his right eye and was reportedly robbed of his valuables during the encounter. The suspects, all identified as minors, have been handed over to the police, with the Central Regional Police Command assuring the public that strict legal action will follow.

Simultaneously, the Agona Swedru Magistrate Court has remanded two 18-year-old students, Benedict Appiah and Bilal Mamid from Swedru Senior High School (SWESBUS), for their involvement in a similar assault on an Obrachire SHS student. The incident, which gained national attention after a video of the assault went viral, triggered a high-level investigation led by the Director of the Criminal Investigation Department, COP Lydia Yaako Donkor. While the two main suspects are set to reappear in court on March 11, 2026, a third student involved, Joseph Aidoo, was released after pleading for forgiveness.

These incidents highlight a pressing need for enhanced security and disciplinary measures during inter-school events. The involvement of top-tier police officials and the swift intervention of the court system signal a zero-tolerance approach toward student-led violence. As investigations continue, educational stakeholders and parents are calling for a refocus on sportsmanship and character building to ensure that school competitions remain safe and constructive environments for all participants.
