Ghana has been officially awarded the hosting rights for the 2028 Olympic Boxing African Qualification Tournament, scheduled to take place in August 2027. The decision follows a successful bid presented by the Ghana Boxing Federation, which was formally confirmed on October 21, 2026, by Paulo Ferreira, the World Boxing Director of Events. This hosting milestone positions the country as a central hub for African boxing ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
The competition is set to run from August 13 to August 22, 2027. To formalize the arrangement, a binding Host City Agreement will be established between the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the government of Ghana. This document will outline the operational costs and specific responsibilities for various local services required to execute the tournament successfully, ensuring that all international standards for Olympic-level competition are met.
Under the terms of the agreement, the Ghanaian government has pledged to cover the transportation and accommodation expenses for the duration of the event. While the state handles these primary financial commitments, the Ghana Boxing Federation will be tasked with managing the overarching logistics and technical operations. This collaborative effort aims to provide a seamless experience for athletes and officials traveling to Ghana for the high-stakes qualifiers.
