Ghana is moving to establish a Center of Excellence for Hearing, Communication and Cochlear Implant Care to tackle the growing burden of disabling hearing loss. The project, discussed during a high-level meeting in Washington, D.C., led by Ambassador Victor Emmanuel Smith, aims to provide specialized services such as ear, nose, and throat (ENT) care and audiology while building local capacity to serve both Ghana and the broader African continent.
Currently, approximately 4.8% of the Ghanaian population suffers from disabling hearing loss, a condition that significantly impacts the development and education of children. The proposed center is designed to offer a comprehensive suite of services, including early hearing screening, advanced audiological assessments, and complex rehabilitation. By focusing on cochlear implant care, the facility will address a substantial gap in the country’s current healthcare infrastructure, reducing the need for patients to seek expensive medical treatment abroad.
Beyond patient care, the initiative serves as a strategic move to position Ghana as a regional hub for medical training. The center will focus on training local specialists to ensure sustainable expertise remains within the country. Ambassador Smith emphasized that the project aims to foster knowledge sharing across Africa, ensuring that the skills developed in Ghana can benefit the entire sub-region. This vision aligns with the Ghana Health Service’s broader strategic plan to achieve equitable and high-quality healthcare services by 2036.
The establishment of this center is expected to complement existing medical institutions while enhancing national capacity to manage sensory disorders. Stakeholders from various international organizations participated in the preliminary discussions, underscoring the global support for Ghana’s ambition to lead in specialized hearing healthcare. If successful, the center will represent a major milestone in the country’s efforts to integrate inclusive health services into the national development agenda.
