The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has intensified its advocacy for a collective national effort to support breastfeeding as the country commemorates World Breastfeeding Week 2026. Coinciding with Ghana’s designated Breastfeeding Month, the GHS is calling on all sectors of society—including families, employers, and policymakers—to recognize breastfeeding not merely as a maternal duty, but as a critical national responsibility. The health authority emphasizes that creating an enabling environment for nursing mothers is essential for improving child survival rates and fostering optimal long-term developmental outcomes across the country.
At the heart of this year’s campaign is a strategic push to integrate breastfeeding support more robustly into Ghana’s primary healthcare system. The GHS is advocating for a significant shift in how communities and workplaces approach the needs of nursing mothers. By championing better workplace policies, such as the implementation of dedicated lactation spaces and flexible schedules, the service aims to reduce the structural barriers that often force women to choose between their professional responsibilities and the nutritional health of their infants. The initiative underscores that the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding extend beyond the individual child, contributing to a healthier, more resilient national population.
Looking forward, the GHS is urging sustained cross-sectoral collaboration to ensure that the vital nutrition provided by breastfeeding is accessible to every child in Ghana. As the month-long awareness drive continues, the focus remains on ensuring that the burden of care is shared across the socio-economic spectrum. By fostering a culture of support from the domestic level to the legislative floor, health officials hope to secure better health outcomes and ensure that every Ghanaian child receives the necessary foundation for a healthy life. The service maintains that achieving these goals requires a unified commitment to making breastfeeding a seamless part of daily life for all mothers.
