The Ghana Health Service (GHS) is set to distribute 80,000 pairs of specialized protective footwear to health professionals as part of a national initiative to enhance safety and infection control. The donation, provided by a partnership between Sanford, World Shoe Ltd., and Samaritan’s Feet Ghana, is specifically intended for medical staff working within the Free Primary Healthcare programme. This contribution addresses a critical need for high-quality personal protective equipment for frontline staff who frequently operate in high-risk clinical environments.
The footwear is manufactured from lightweight Ethyl Vinyl Acetate (EVA) foam, a material selected for its durability and comfort during long shifts. The shoes are designed with antimicrobial properties to prevent the spread of infections and are notably biodegradable, aligning healthcare requirements with environmental sustainability. Manny Ohonme, representing the donor organizations, emphasized that prioritizing local manufacturing for these supplies is essential for creating jobs and ensuring a sustainable supply chain for the nation's health sector.
Dr. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, speaking for the Ghana Health Service, stressed the importance of efficient logistics to ensure that the footwear reaches the intended beneficiaries across various districts. He noted that equipping staff with appropriate gear is fundamental to the service's mission of providing safe and effective care. Karoliina Slack from Sanford added that the donation serves as a gesture of appreciation for the dedication and sacrifices made by Ghanaian health workers in the line of duty.
This initiative highlights the growing collaboration between the GHS and private sector stakeholders to improve health worker welfare and infrastructure. By providing protective equipment that is both functional and locally produced, the partners aim to foster a safer working environment while stimulating economic growth. Moving forward, the GHS and its partners have expressed their intention to explore further opportunities to enhance healthcare delivery and support the workforce through such strategic resource allocations.
