On July 6, 2026, the Ghana Institute of Geoscientists (GhIG) officially unveiled the "Geoscience for a Safer Ghana" initiative, a strategic program designed to mitigate the recurring devastation of floods and landslides through rigorous scientific research and data-driven planning. The launch comes as a direct response to recent environmental disasters that have caused significant loss of life, mass displacement, and extensive property damage across the country. By championing a scientific approach, the GhIG aims to transition the national disaster strategy from a reactive model focused on emergency relief to a proactive model centered on prevention and resilience.
To address immediate safety concerns, the GhIG has proposed three critical recommendations for the government and relevant agencies. First, the institute is calling for rapid geohazard mapping in high-risk districts, utilizing advanced satellite imagery to identify vulnerable zones. Second, they advocate for a temporary suspension of new building permits in flood-prone areas until comprehensive geoscientific assessments are completed to ensure structural safety. Finally, the GhIG emphasizes the importance of collaboration, urging the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to include professional geoscientists in their field assessment teams to provide more accurate evaluations of environmental risks.
Throughout the month of July, the GhIG is conducting an intensive national campaign to enhance public understanding of geosciences and disaster preparedness. This outreach includes a series of media engagements, expert-led articles on the science of flooding, and specialized community studies focused on mudslide prevention. A key highlight of the campaign is a public webinar scheduled for July 29, 2026, which will serve as a platform for experts and citizens to discuss scientific solutions for managing Ghana’s unique topographical challenges.
Ultimately, the "Geoscience for a Safer Ghana" initiative seeks to embed scientific knowledge into the heart of national planning and urban development. By advocating for evidence-based policies and fostering community participation, the GhIG aims to build a safer and more resilient nation. The institute's leadership maintains that integrating geoscience into disaster risk management is not only a technical necessity but a moral imperative to protect lives and property from the increasing threats of natural disasters.
