High Court Orders Ghana Chess Association to Pay GH¢25,000 to Miracle Morris Stephen Over Illegal Suspension

The Human Rights Division of the High Court in Accra has ruled in favor of Ghanaian chess player Miracle Morris Stephen, awarding him GH¢25,000 in damages following a legal battle against the Ghana Chess Association (GCA). The court found that the association’s decision to suspend Morris on February 7, 2026, was not only a violation of his fundamental human rights but also a breach of the association's own internal regulations. The ruling effectively nullifies the suspension from its inception, clearing the path for the player to return to competitive play.

The dispute originated when the GCA moved to sanction Morris after he withdrew from the Ghana National Chess Championships, citing health reasons. However, the court determined that the association failed to provide Morris with an opportunity to defend himself or offer a fair hearing before imposing the disciplinary measure. By bypassing these essential procedures, the GCA was found to have violated the principles of natural justice and its own statutes, rendering the suspension invalid and procedurally flawed.

Beyond the procedural failures, the presiding judge highlighted a significant breach of privacy regarding how the disciplinary action was handled. The court ruled that the GCA’s public announcement of the suspension improperly exposed Morris’s personal circumstances to the public domain. Consequently, the court has directed the Ghana Chess Association to officially reinstate the player and publish a formal revocation of the suspension to restore his reputation. Morris was represented throughout the legal proceedings by his counsel, Lawyer Charles Raymond Appiah Tandoh.
