The governments of Ghana and Canada have formalized a strategic partnership aimed at enhancing the global mobility of maritime professionals through a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Signed in London on November 5, 2026, the agreement establishes the mutual recognition of maritime certificates issued by both nations. This development is set to create immediate employment pathways for Ghanaian seafarers, allowing them to serve on Canadian-flagged vessels and contribute more broadly to the international shipping industry.
Under the terms of the MoU, Ghanaian seafarers will find it significantly easier to have their certifications and technical qualifications validated by Canadian maritime authorities. This move addresses previous administrative barriers that often prevented skilled Ghanaian workers from accessing high-value roles within the Canadian maritime sector. Furthermore, the agreement emphasizes a collaborative approach to maritime safety and training standards, ensuring that educational institutions in both countries maintain rigorous benchmarks that meet the requirements of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
The Ghana High Commission in London expressed high praise for the initiative, highlighting it as a reflection of the deep-seated cooperation between the two nations. Officials stated that the pact not only supports labor export and economic growth but also strengthens Ghana’s position as a hub for maritime excellence in West Africa. By aligning training and safety standards with those of a major maritime player like Canada, Ghana continues to bolster the professional standing of its seafarers on the world stage.
