The Ministry of Education has announced that 527,932 candidates, representing 87.3% of those who qualified in the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), have been successfully placed into Senior High Schools (SHS) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions. This announcement follows the release of the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) results on September 4, 2026. While the majority of the 604,567 qualified candidates received automatic placements, a significant number of students must now navigate the self-placement portal to secure their spots for the upcoming academic year.
In a significant policy shift, the government has introduced a lifeline for 53,887 candidates who were initially disadvantaged by scoring Grade 9 in either English Language or Mathematics. Deputy Minister of Education Dr. Clement Apaak explained that this group includes 35,382 students who failed one of these core subjects and 18,505 who failed both. Previously, such grades often barred students from immediate placement. Under the new arrangement, these candidates are eligible to use the CSSPS self-placement module to select schools and programs where vacancies still exist, ensuring their education journey is not truncated by these specific results.
Dr. Apaak noted that many unplaced candidates were victims of the high competition for Category A schools, where demand consistently outstrips available capacity. To address these challenges, the Ministry has launched an upgraded version of the CSSPS designed to streamline the admission process and enhance user experience. The Deputy Minister urged parents and guardians to be proactive in using the self-placement system and to explore a wider range of schools beyond the most popular institutions. He also issued a stern warning against corruption, advising the public to ignore individuals posing as placement contractors and instead use official Ministry contact lines for assistance.
For the small remaining group of candidates, including 3,372 students whose results are pending or who did not qualify for immediate self-placement, the government has provided options to re-sit the examination. The Ministry of Education remains committed to maintaining the integrity of the placement process while providing diverse pathways for all students to access secondary education. As the 2026 academic cycle begins, officials will continue to monitor the performance of placed candidates to ensure the transition into SHS and TVET institutions remains effective and inclusive.
