In anticipation of World Cleanup Day on September 20, 2026, the GF Foundation (GFF) has launched a comprehensive sanitation education initiative across the Greater Accra region. This campaign is designed to foster a culture of safe waste disposal and rigorous personal hygiene among Ghanaians, specifically targeting the prevention of communicable diseases. By engaging directly with local communities, the foundation seeks to bridge the gap between environmental awareness and actionable health practices to improve public health outcomes.
The foundation’s educational sessions cover a wide range of essential hygiene and sanitation topics. These include workshops on proper techniques for handwashing and bathing, as well as respiratory etiquette and the correct use of toilet facilities. Beyond individual hygiene, the GFF is also providing training on effective solid waste management strategies. Haggar Quao, the Head of Community Environmental Research at GFF, highlighted that these workshops are vital for ensuring that community members understand the direct link between their immediate environment and their overall physical well-being.
A major highlight of the campaign is a large-scale cleanup exercise scheduled for 7:00 AM on the official event day. The activity will center on the Nungua area, with volunteers and community members working their way from the Nungua Market to the Nungua Police Station. The operation will involve desilting gutters and clearing accumulated debris to improve local drainage and environmental aesthetics. This local effort mirrors the broader global mission of World Cleanup Day, which annually mobilizes millions of people across more than 190 countries to confront the escalating solid waste crisis.
Looking beyond the immediate cleanup, the GF Foundation is advocating for a long-term shift in environmental stewardship. Haggar Quao emphasized that while the one-day event is significant for raising awareness, the ultimate goal is to inspire continuous environmental care that extends throughout the year. By instilling these values today, the GFF aims to create cleaner, healthier communities that can sustain high sanitation standards independently, contributing to a cleaner Ghana and a more sustainable global environment.
