The Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially extended its deepest condolences to the families of four eight-year-old pupils from Mahad Islamic School who lost their lives in a tragic road accident at Akotosu, near Aboabo Junction in the Ashanti Region. The incident, which occurred on October 20, has sparked widespread concern over the safety of schoolchildren navigating busy roads. In addition to the four fatalities, three other pupils sustained various degrees of injury during the accident and were rushed to the hospital for emergency medical attention.
The deceased children have been identified as Juraid Mohammed, Anisah Ibrahim, Fati Muniru, and Raiyan Faisal. According to reports, the driver of the vehicle involved in the fatal crash is currently in police custody as investigations into the cause of the accident continue. Among the survivors, two pupils are reported to be in critical condition, while one remains in a stable state. The GES has emphasized the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures, particularly in areas where vulnerable schoolchildren are required to cross high-traffic zones to reach their educational institutions.
Following the tragedy, the head of Mahad Islamic School and grieving parents have intensified calls for the construction of a footbridge at the accident site to prevent future occurrences. The Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly is expected to assess the feasibility of the footbridge proposal to ensure the long-term safety of students and residents in the vicinity. Furthermore, there are ongoing discussions regarding the coverage of hospital expenses for the injured pupils as the community rallies to support the affected families during this difficult period.
