GBA President Celebrates Success of 2025 Africa Basketball Festival as a Key Milestone

Sierra Leone to debut at Africa Basketball Festival 2026

Sierra Leone is officially scheduled to make its first-ever appearance at the Africa Basketball Festival (ABF) in 2026. This historic participation marks a significant milestone for the nation’s sporting landscape, as it joins one of the continent's most vibrant platforms that merges athletic competition with cultural expression. The move is expected to elevate the profile of Sierra Leonean basketball on the international stage while fostering deeper connections between the country's sports and creative sectors. Leading the initiative is Abubakr Dumbuya, the founder of FAMBUL, who has been tasked with the responsibility of assembling a formidable representative team. Dumbuya’s mandate involves scouting and recruiting talented Sierra Leonean players from both the domestic league and the global diaspora. By drawing on talent from across the world, the organizers aim to build a squad that reflects the depth of Sierra Leonean basketball skill and provides a platform for athletes to showcase their abilities to a wider African audience. The Africa Basketball Festival is renowned for its unique format, which transcends traditional sports tournaments by integrating fashion and music into the event schedule. This lifestyle-oriented approach creates a multifaceted experience where players, designers, and musicians can collaborate. For Sierra Leone, participating in the 2026 edition offers more than just a sporting challenge; it provides a cultural window for the country to display its creative industries alongside its athletic prowess, strengthening ties with other African nations through a shared love for the game and the arts. As preparations begin for the 2026 debut, the inclusion of Sierra Leone is seen as a boost for the festival’s diversity and competitive spirit. The involvement of FAMBUL and Abubakr Dumbuya highlights a growing trend of private-sector leadership in sports development. Moving forward, the focus will remain on identifying key talent and securing the necessary support to ensure that Sierra Leone’s inaugural appearance at the Africa Basketball Festival is both competitive and culturally impactful.
