The Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE) has announced the successful repair and deployment of 48 previously grounded Aayalolo buses, significantly bolstering the public transport fleet in the nation’s capital. This strategic move increases the total number of operational buses to 128, specifically targeting major routes across Accra to enhance commuter mobility and alleviate the chronic traffic congestion that plagues the Greater Accra Region. The initiative was highlighted during a high-level visit by the Minister for Transport, Mahama Ayariga, to the Madina terminal, where the operational capacity of the fleet was reviewed.
Managing Director of GAPTE, Awudu Dawuda, emphasized that the deployment is a critical step in fulfilling the organization's mandate to provide reliable public transportation. Having inherited a fleet of 80 operational buses, GAPTE’s focus has shifted toward restoring grounded assets to meet the growing demand for affordable transit. This expansion is expected to provide relief to thousands of daily commuters and reduce the reliance on smaller commercial vehicles, thereby streamlining traffic flow on key arterial roads within the city.
Simultaneously, the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) has committed to addressing emerging defects on the Jasikan-Dodo-Pepesu section of the Eastern Corridor Road. Following reports of deteriorating road conditions that have raised safety concerns for commercial drivers and residents, Road Maintenance Engineer Ing. Robert Annan acknowledged that while previous repairs had been undertaken, further technical interventions are now necessary. The road, which serves as a vital economic artery linking communities in the Oti Region, was originally inaugurated in September 2022 by the former Vice-President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
The push for road repairs follows vocal advocacy from local leaders, including Assemblyman Mr. Hamza Lukman, who pointed out that the defects pose a significant risk to road users and hinder the transport of goods. The GHA is currently monitoring the situation and has urged the primary contractor to expedite the necessary remedial works. By ensuring the longevity of this critical infrastructure, the authority aims to support regional economic activities and maintain the integrity of the Eastern Corridor, which remains a cornerstone of Ghana’s national transit strategy under the administration of President John Mahama.
