The Government of The Gambia and Zoomlion Ghana Limited have signed a comprehensive concession agreement to implement an Integrated Waste Management Project across the West African nation. The agreement, formalised on October 28, 2023, in Banjul, establishes a strategic partnership aimed at revolutionising the country’s sanitation landscape and addressing persistent environmental challenges. Vice President Mohammed B.S. Jallow and Environment Minister Rohey John Manjang represented the Gambian government at the ceremony, signaling high-level state commitment to the initiative.
The project's first phase focuses on the decommissioning of existing, inefficient dumpsites and the construction of modern waste treatment facilities. A central component of this infrastructure is a Mechanical Biological Treatment Plant, which is designed to process municipal solid waste and convert it into valuable resources. This modern approach is expected to significantly reduce public health risks associated with inadequate waste collection and disposal while simultaneously creating new employment opportunities for local residents.
Vice President Jallow praised the Jospong Group, the parent company of Zoomlion, for its investment and commitment to tackling the country’s environmental issues. He noted that the partnership is essential for overcoming long-standing health hazards caused by poorly managed waste. Environment Minister Rohey John Manjang described the deal as a bold step toward sustainable development, emphasizing that the collaboration will improve the overall quality of life for Gambians by cleaning up urban spaces and protecting natural resources.
Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, Chairman of the Jospong Group, highlighted the importance of local participation and sustainability in the project's operations. He pledged that the company would provide the necessary heavy equipment and technical expertise to ensure the facilities operate effectively. The initiative involves close collaboration among government agencies, local governments, and the private sector to foster responsible waste disposal practices and ensure the long-term success of the national sanitation overhaul.
