The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has officially implemented mandatory luggage pre-screening for all passengers at the entrance of the Departure Hall at Kotoka International Airport. Effective October 2, these new security protocols are being conducted in collaboration with the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC). The initiative is designed to bolster security oversight and ensure a more controlled environment within the terminal by identifying prohibited items before travelers reach the check-in counters. This move aligns the airport with international aviation standards and addresses evolving security needs. Under the new directive, every passenger must undergo luggage screening involving advanced scanning machines and sniffer dogs before entering the departures area. To facilitate these additional layers of security without disrupting flight schedules, the GACL has issued a strict advisory for all travelers to arrive at the airport at least three hours prior to their scheduled departure. Furthermore, access to the Departure Hall is now restricted exclusively to ticketed passengers, meaning non-travelers and well-wishers will no longer be permitted inside the main hall area. While security has been tightened, the GACL has also integrated modern technology to maintain passenger convenience and operational efficiency. Upgraded equipment in Terminals 2 and 3 now allows passengers to keep electronic devices like laptops inside their bags and permits them to keep on shoes and belts during certain checks. These systems, which include an Automatic Tray Return System, are specifically designed to reduce waiting times and physical bottlenecks, providing a more seamless experience for travelers despite the increased scrutiny. These measures represent a significant step in the GACL's ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and security of all airport users and aircraft operations. By partnering with specialized agencies like NACOC, the airport authority is reinforcing its commitment to preventing the transit of illicit substances and ensuring a secure gateway for Ghana. The GACL has expressed its appreciation for the cooperation of the traveling public as these essential security enhancements are integrated into daily operations, emphasizing that passenger safety remains the highest priority.
