Veteran sound engineer Fred Kyei Mensah, popularly known as Fredyma, has issued a call to upcoming Ghanaian musicians to prioritize creativity and regular production to survive in the competitive music industry. Speaking during an appearance on Woezor TV’s Breakfast Caf, the seasoned industry professional cautioned that the music landscape is highly volatile, meaning no artist can afford to become complacent with their current status or popularity. He highlighted that the lack of job security in the entertainment sector makes it imperative for artists to stay relevant through constant engagement with their listeners.
Fredyma emphasized the fluid nature of the industry by stating that "overtaking is allowed," a reference to the ease with which new talent can surpass established acts if the latter fails to innovate. He noted that audience preferences are constantly shifting, and the continuous influx of fresh talent means that even the most prominent artists can be quickly replaced. To build a sustainable career in the Ghanaian music scene, he underscored the necessity of producing music regularly and maintaining a disciplined approach to the craft.
While acknowledging that experience and tenure are valuable assets, Fredyma argued they are not substitutes for current creative output. He advised musicians to ensure they have a steady stream of content to keep their fanbases engaged and to mitigate the risk of being overshadowed by more active peers. His advice comes at a time when digital streaming and social media have lowered the barriers to entry for new artists, significantly increasing the pace of the industry.
By highlighting the importance of consistency, the veteran producer aimed to equip the next generation of performers with the mindset needed to navigate the pressures of fame. He concluded that for any artist to thrive long-term, they must treat their creativity as a continuous process rather than a one-time effort, ensuring they remain at the forefront of the audience's attention amidst a crowded field of competitors.
