The Foundation for Security and Development in Africa (FOSDA) has called on the government and security agencies to launch a comprehensive investigation into a deadly dynamite explosion at the Hamile border in the Upper West Region. The incident, which occurred on November 3, 2026, resulted in the deaths of a Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) officer and two civilians. Several other individuals sustained various degrees of injury in the blast, which has sparked significant concern over the management of hazardous materials along Ghana’s frontiers.
In a statement reacting to the tragedy, FOSDA expressed deep alarm regarding the unauthorized movement of explosives across international borders. The organization noted that the incident reveals critical vulnerabilities in the country’s current border security protocols. According to FOSDA, the fact that high-grade explosives like dynamite could be transported or handled in a manner that leads to such a fatal accident suggests a lapse in oversight and monitoring that could have far-reaching national security implications if left unaddressed.
The security-focused non-governmental organization emphasized that the investigation must not only identify the immediate cause of the blast but also scrutinize the entire supply chain and transit permits associated with the explosives. FOSDA urged for a significant overhaul of regulations governing the movement of dangerous goods. They argued that better coordination among the various security agencies stationed at the borders—including the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, the Ghana Police Service, and the Ghana Immigration Service—is essential to prevent a recurrence of such a disaster.
Beyond institutional reforms, FOSDA also highlighted the importance of community engagement as a vital component of border security. The organization suggested that residents in border towns like Hamile should be educated and empowered to report suspicious activities or the illegal storage of hazardous materials. As the nation mourns the loss of the security officer and the civilians, FOSDA extended its condolences to the bereaved families, stressing that the best way to honor the victims is to ensure that stringent measures are put in place to secure Ghana's borders and protect its citizens from similar threats in the future.
