Fifi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has admitted that the party erred in its initial handling of sexual abuse allegations involving Julius Zakaria Abdulai, the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS). Speaking on the matter, Kwetey acknowledged that the party’s decision to prematurely clear the headmaster was a mistake, as it was made before leadership had the opportunity to review critical evidence presented in an investigative documentary.
The controversy began when Abdulai faced serious allegations of sexual abuse. Initially, the NDC stood by the headmaster after a meeting where he strongly denied the claims. Kwetey explained that at the time, Abdulai’s explanations seemed convincing, especially given reports that he had been cleared by the Ghana Education Service. However, the release of an investigative report by journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni provided a different perspective, offering evidence that fundamentally changed the party's understanding of the situation.
Following the revelation of the new evidence, the NDC reassessed its stance and directed Abdulai to step aside. Kwetey noted that the party should have delayed its final judgment until all available information, including the documentary, had been thoroughly vetted. He characterized the incident as a significant learning moment for the party, emphasizing the importance of responsible handling and thorough evaluation when dealing with serious allegations of misconduct to ensure both justice and institutional integrity.
