The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has issued an immediate recall order for Franko Herbal Mixture after laboratory testing revealed the product is dangerously adulterated. This regulatory action requires the producer, Franko Herbal Centre, to withdraw all batches of the mixture from the Ghanaian market to prevent further risk to public health. The FDA identified that the contents of the herbal product do not align with safety standards, necessitating its swift removal from retail outlets across the country.
Alongside the market recall, the regulator has moved to shut down the company’s manufacturing plant located in Jacobu, in the Ashanti Region. The closure of the facility is intended to halt any further production or distribution of the contaminated medicine. According to the FDA, this enforcement measure was necessary following the laboratory results that confirmed the presence of unauthorized substances within the herbal mixture, which could pose severe health risks to unsuspecting consumers.
The FDA has also outlined plans for the safe disposal of all confiscated products to ensure they are permanently removed from the supply chain. Authorities are currently coordinating the retrieval of the product from various points of sale to ensure no bottles remain on pharmacy or herbal shop shelves. Consumers who have purchased Franko Herbal Mixture are strongly advised to discontinue its use immediately and return any remaining bottles to the point of purchase or the nearest FDA office.
This intervention highlights the FDA's ongoing efforts to regulate the herbal medicine sector and protect citizens from substandard or falsified medical products. The authority has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all medicinal products sold in Ghana are safe, efficacious, and of high quality. Manufacturers are reminded that the adulteration of herbal products is a violation of the Public Health Act, and the FDA will continue to monitor the market and apply strict sanctions against those who compromise consumer safety.
