FDA Probes Chemical Ripening at Madina Market and Issues Urgent Warning on Flood-Contaminated Foods

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has intensified its public safety efforts by launching a targeted investigation into the misuse of ripening chemicals and issuing a stern warning regarding food products affected by recent flooding. These actions follow a viral social media video depicting the alleged use of chemicals to ripen plantains at the Madina Market in Accra, alongside ongoing concerns regarding food safety in the aftermath of the June 29 floods. The FDA's prompt response underscores its commitment to safeguarding Ghanaian consumers against both hazardous market practices and environmental contaminants.

In the Madina Market case, the FDA, in collaboration with the Environmental Health Unit of the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly, identified the chemical "Ethemax" as a primary substance of concern. Ethemax contains ethephon, an agricultural regulator that the FDA believes is being potentially misused by traders to artificially accelerate the ripening process. Following a formal notice issued on August 17, 2026, the authority has been engaging with market traders and the individual who recorded the video to verify these claims and initiate regulatory actions against the unauthorized sale and application of such substances.

Simultaneously, the FDA has alerted the public to the severe health risks associated with consuming food and beverage products compromised by floodwaters. Consumers are strongly advised to avoid any items with peeling, stained, or discoloured labels, as these are clear indicators of water damage and potential contamination. The Authority emphasized that even if the internal contents appear intact, floodwater can harbor dangerous pathogens and industrial toxins that may penetrate packaging. Crucially, the FDA warned that merely washing the exterior of these containers does not guarantee the safety of the product inside.

To manage these risks, the FDA has issued strict directives to manufacturers and distributors, prohibiting the reprocessing of any flood-affected inventory. Such products must be reported to the Authority for supervised, safe disposal, with non-compliance carrying the threat of legal sanctions. For the general public, the FDA recommends heightened vigilance, urging consumers to purchase exclusively from licensed retailers and to thoroughly wash all fresh produce before consumption. These combined measures are intended to prevent foodborne illnesses and ensure the continued integrity of the national food supply chain.
