Family Health University (FHU) has inaugurated a seven-member Board of Trustees to manage its Endowment Fund, which is dedicated to supporting financially disadvantaged students in healthcare education. The fund aims to provide sustainable financial aid for students pursuing medical and nursing careers in Ghana, ensuring that economic barriers do not prevent talent from entering the health sector. The ceremony underscores the institution's commitment to social responsibility and its focus on developing the country’s human resource capacity in health.
The newly appointed board is chaired by Dr. Nicholas Smart-Yeboah, who leads a team that includes notable professionals such as Dr. Koku Awoonor-Williams and Mrs. Reeta Auguste. During the swearing-in, the Vice-Chancellor of Family Health University highlighted the necessity of rigorous resource mobilization and the board's duty to maintain transparency and accountability. The Council Chairman further urged the trustees to move swiftly in their efforts to attract donors and grow the fund’s capital base.
Dr. Smart-Yeboah pledged the board’s full commitment to expanding opportunities for students who, despite their academic potential, face significant financial hurdles. He noted that the board would work tirelessly to ensure the fund becomes a reliable source of support for those in the medical and nursing disciplines. This initiative is expected to reduce the dropout rate among healthcare students and contribute to the overall strength of Ghana's healthcare system.
The FHU Endowment Fund was first launched on March 23, 2023, as a long-term strategy to provide financial security for its students. By establishing this formal governance structure, the university aims to institutionalize its support systems and foster a culture of philanthropy within the academic community. The successful management of this fund is viewed as a vital component in training the next generation of healthcare professionals to serve the nation.
