Ghanaian artist Ezra Appiah is set to debut his first solo exhibition, "Family Album: A New and a Reborn Version," at The Mix Design Hub in Accra. Scheduled to run from November 7 to 27, 2026, the exhibition represents a significant milestone in Appiah's career and is presented in collaboration with Absa L’Atelier. The showcase arrives after the artist completed a two-month residency in South Africa, which served as a formative period for the development of this body of work.
The exhibition invites the public to engage with themes of memory, identity, and lived experience. Appiah utilizes family photographs as a primary medium, reinterpreting these personal archives to create a dialogue between the past and the present. By exploring the nuances of his own heritage and the collective human experience, the artist offers a "new and reborn" perspective on traditional family narratives, blending personal history with contemporary artistic expression.
This exhibition is part of the broader Absa L’Atelier program, which is currently celebrating its 40th anniversary of supporting emerging artists across the African continent. Appiah’s solo show highlights the impact of the program’s residency component, which provides artists with the space and resources to evolve their practice. The event also serves as a platform to acknowledge broader Ghanaian talent, including Reginald Boateng, who was recently named a 2026 Absa L’Atelier Art Ambassador Award winner for his work in environmental activism.
The upcoming showcase at The Mix Design Hub underscores the growing prominence of Ghanaian contemporary art on both national and international stages. By hosting the exhibition in Accra, the organizers aim to foster a deeper appreciation for local talent and encourage dialogue within the creative community. As Appiah transitions from his residency to this solo debut, the exhibition stands as a testament to the enduring importance of corporate-led art initiatives in nurturing the next generation of African creative voices.
