Elon Musk has revealed that a merger between Tesla and SpaceX is under active consideration, a move that could create a corporate giant with a combined valuation exceeding $3.5 trillion. Speaking during a recent call with financial analysts, Musk indicated that special committees from both companies are currently exploring the feasibility of the consolidation. If successful, the deal would integrate Tesla’s automotive and energy divisions with SpaceX’s aerospace and satellite internet operations, marking one of the largest mergers in history.
The proposal hinges on the approval of shareholders from both entities, which Musk described as a crucial step for the process to move forward. Although he is a primary stakeholder in both firms, Musk clarified that he is not a member of the special committees tasked with evaluating the technical and financial merits of the deal. Currently, Tesla is valued at approximately $1.5 trillion, while SpaceX holds a private valuation of roughly $2 trillion. The merger aims to bring SpaceX’s rapidly expanding Starlink services and cloud computing initiatives under the same corporate umbrella as Tesla’s electric vehicle and battery manufacturing arms.
Despite the significant scale of the proposed entity, the merger faces potential hurdles, including SpaceX’s current financial performance. While segments like Starlink are increasingly profitable, the aerospace firm continues to record overall financial losses as it scales its ambitious space programs. However, the integration could allow for significant synergies between Tesla’s autonomous driving technology and SpaceX’s global satellite network. The special committees will continue their assessments before any formal proposal is presented to the respective shareholders for a final vote.
