Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, has held high-level discussions with her counterparts from Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali to strengthen economic ties within the West African sub-region. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 18th Salon International de l'Artisanat de Ouagadougou (SIAO) 2026 in Burkina Faso. The primary goal of these consultations was to explore new avenues for trade cooperation and address existing bottlenecks that hinder smooth commercial activity between Ghana and the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).
During the deliberations, Ofosu-Adjare emphasized the critical need to identify and remove non-tariff barriers that frequently disrupt the flow of goods across borders. She called for a strategic shift from high-level dialogue to practical, actionable outcomes that would yield tangible economic benefits for all participating nations. The ministers explored ways to foster deeper regional integration, recognizing that collective action is essential to overcome the logistical and regulatory hurdles currently affecting intra-regional trade.
The ministers from the Sahelian nations acknowledged the persistence of trade challenges but expressed a shared commitment to sustained engagement. The discussions highlighted the importance of agribusiness and industrial cooperation as pillars for mutual development. By aligning trade policies and improving economic relations, the four countries aim to create a more resilient economic bloc capable of weathering global market fluctuations while empowering local industries and artisans.
As the 18th SIAO 2026 continues to showcase the artistic and economic potential of the region, these diplomatic engagements signal a renewed focus on South-South cooperation. The meeting concluded with a mutual understanding to follow up on the specific trade initiatives discussed, ensuring that the partnership between Ghana and the Sahel states leads to improved livelihoods and expanded market access for businesses. The focus now turns to implementing the proposed frameworks to streamline cross-border commerce and enhance industrial synergy.
